Chromatopelma cyaneopubescens, often called the Green Bottle Blue or GBB, is one of the most eye-catching tarantulas in the hobby. Native to the dry regions of northern Venezuela, this species is famous for its brilliant blue legs, green carapace, and fiery orange abdomen. Unlike many terrestrial tarantulas, GBBs are heavy webbers and will quickly fill their enclosure with thick silk tunnels and web mats. They are fast-moving and can be defensive, but they are not considered aggressive and usually prefer retreat over confrontation. Their hardy nature, striking appearance, and fascinating web-building behavior make them especially popular among tarantula keepers.
Green Bottle Blue Tarantula Care Guide
The Green Bottle Blue, or GBB, is one of the most colourful and entertaining tarantulas you can keep. With bright blue legs, an orange abdomen, and a greenish carapace, it almost looks unreal. It’s also famous for making huge amounts of webbing, often turning its entire enclosure into a silk fortress.
Temperament
GBBs are usually more nervous than aggressive. They’re quick, alert, and may kick hairs if disturbed, but they generally prefer running away over biting. Because they can move very fast, calm and careful handling is important.
Enclosure Setup
Even though they are considered terrestrial, GBBs enjoy climbing and webbing above ground. A well-ventilated enclosure with anchor points like cork bark, branches, and fake plants works perfectly.
Keep the substrate mostly dry. These spiders come from arid regions and dislike damp conditions. Good airflow is much more important than high humidity.
Temperature & Humidity
Temperature: around 22–28°C
Humidity: low to moderate
Ventilation: extremely important
Avoid keeping the enclosure wet, as stagnant moisture can cause problems.
Feeding
GBBs are enthusiastic eaters and will happily take crickets, roaches, and other appropriately sized feeder insects. Spiderlings usually eat once or twice weekly, while adults can be fed every 7–14 days.
Webbing
One of the best parts of owning a GBB is watching it web. They create thick tunnels, feeding platforms, and silk sheets all over the enclosure. Don’t be surprised if you barely see the substrate after a few weeks.
Lifespan
Females can live 12–15 years or more, while males typically live only a few years after maturity.
Final Thoughts
The Green Bottle Blue is often recommended for keepers wanting a visually stunning and active tarantula. They’re hardy, fascinating to watch, and relatively straightforward to care for once their dry setup and ventilation needs are understood.
