This is not a pairing for the faint-hearted or first-timers. T. blondi is a giant with specific care needs and an attitude to match. Breeding requires careful prep, ace husbandry, and nerves of steel. If you’re committed, well-informed, and have plenty of patience, successful breeding is possible – but be ready for drama, uncertainty, and possibly dozens to hundreds of spiderlings! Treat much of the timing as guesswork, and never rush conditioning or introductions.

Wild Breeding Season

Wild breeding season for Theraphosa blondi isn’t firmly nailed down, but based on its tropical habitat, activity seems highest in the wettest, muggiest times of year. Expect most courtship and egg-laying to fall around peak rainy months when food and humidity are at their best.

Wild Environmental Triggers

In the wild, breeding is likely spurred on by rising humidity, heavy rainfall, and a good abundance of prey. Heavy storms and regular flooding create the muggy, rich conditions that seem to get these spiders on the move.

Native Climate Context

Hailing from lowland Amazon rainforest, T. blondi is surrounded by humid, warm weather year-round. Burrows stay damp and shaded, and sudden warm rains are the norm. There are no big cold snaps or dry spells in their natural home, just endless heat, humidity, and dense undergrowth.

Captive Breeding Window

Captive pairings seem most successful when mimicking the tail end of a moult cycle, as well as bumping up humidity and ensuring frequent misting. Aim for extra damp conditions after both tarantulas have settled post-moult and the female looks properly plump – but there’s no strict ‘season’ in captivity, so timing can be flexible.

Pre-pairing Conditioning

Both male and female should be in top condition: mature, well-fed, and fully hardened after moult. Fatten up the female a bit beforehand, keeping the enclosure humid and prey items regular. Male should be mature, freshly moulted, and clearly active.

Male Introduction Guidance

Introduce the male gently, ideally in the evening after he’s been allowed to acclimatise in a separate container nearby. Use plenty of hides and don’t force contact; these are hefty spiders, and the female can turn aggressive fast. Supervise closely and be ready to separate them at a moment’s notice – this species isn’t famous for kindness during pairing.

Female Readiness Signs

A receptive female is freshly moulted, plump, settled in her burrow, and may leave subtle draglines or pace at the entrance. If she’s defensive, hiding, or in pre-moult, hold off and give her more time.

Post-pairing Conditions

Once pairing has happened (or if it’s even suspected), keep things humid but well-ventilated, settle the female in, and avoid disturbance. Keep her well-fed with protein-rich food, and don’t allow the substrate to dry out. Move the male well away to avoid post-courtship cannibalism.

Sac Timeline

There’s a lot of variation in reports, but generally, eggsacs may appear anywhere from four to twelve weeks after pairing. No set timeline – patience is key.

Incubation Notes

Eggsacs should be kept humid and undisturbed; interference risks disaster. Avoid excess handling or rolling. Some cautions against artificial incubation due to this species’ picky humidity needs – let mum handle it if possible.

Expected Sling Count

Clutch sizes can be impressive, potentially several hundred spiderlings – but counts vary wildly, and survival rates aren’t always high. Prepare for lots of little legs if things go well.

Risks and Cautions

Pairings can be risky, with the female sometimes eating the male or destroying the eggsac, especially if she feels threatened. This is a high-maintenance process needing excellent climate control and lots of experience. Expect nerves, patience, and a fair bit of luck.
