Reports from close relatives and climate patterns suggest breeding is linked to the seasonal rainfall rather than strict calendar months.
Wild Environmental Triggers
Heavy seasonal rains and increased humidity seem to trigger breeding behaviour, as the soil becomes softer for burrowing and egg sac production. The constantly warm, humid conditions provide an extended window for reproductive activity, but the wet season remains the primary cue.

Native to Cameroon’s lush, humid zones, H. gigas enjoys stable warmth and consistently high humidity year-round. Torrential rains and seasonal flooding are natural here, and these spiders are often found in riverside or swampy forest floors, rarely straying from moist habitats.

No specific captive pairing window is widely accepted, but many breeders attempt introductions after simulated increases in moisture and slight temperature rises, usually in the spring or early summer. This roughly mimics the onset of the rainy season in their home turf.

A well-fed, healthy female is key, with at least several months since her last moult. Gradually boost moisture in her enclosure and keep her settled for a couple of weeks before any introductions. Male Introduction Guidance
This species can be very defensive and unpredictable, so do introductions on neutral ground within the female’s enclosure—never in her main burrow. Keep both spiders visible and ready to separate at any sign of aggression. Evening introductions, with a red light handy for observation, are often less stressful. Some breeders use a temporary barrier or split enclosure, though success varies.
Female Readiness Signs
A receptive female may emerge from her burrow with curiosity, remain calm, or drum gently. A flat or tense posture, defensive slapping, or quick retreats into the burrow are all warning signs—if she’s not keen, best to try again in a week or two.
Post-pairing Conditions
After a successful pairing, keep humidity up and avoid any major changes to enclosure layout—let her get comfortable.
