While not as dramatic as some other tarantulas, pairing can be slow-going and egg sacs aren’t always guaranteed. Think of it as a marathon, not a sprint—you’ll need to mimic those gentle Chilean seasons and keep your spiders well-fed, cosy, and undisturbed for the best chance of a successful brood.

Grammostola porteri come from Chile’s central valleys, a region with warm, dry days and chilly nights for much of the year. These spiders are well-adapted to seasonal changes, dealing with a mix of cooler winters and mild, dry summers. It’s a climate that swings from about 10°C at night up to the mid-20s by day, with humidity rarely spiking outside of rainier months.
Captive Breeding Window
Pairing usually works best as British spring gives way to summer, loosely echoing those Chilean seasonal cues. Aim for a few months after your spider's last moult and when they’ve put on a bit of bulk, but steer clear of the coldest or driest stretch of the year.
Pre-pairing Conditioning
Give your adult female a little extra food in the run-up to pairing so she’s in top condition, but don’t overdo it. A few weeks before the introduction, increase humidity ever so slightly and let temperatures amble towards the mid-20s during the day. Make sure both spiders are well-rested and freshly moulted, ideally with a couple of months since their last shed.
Male Introduction Guidance
Introduce the male to the female’s enclosure in the evening, keeping a close eye from the sidelines—things can turn sour quickly. Use a barrier or tongs if you need to separate them in a hurry, and give them plenty of space so the male can escape if the female isn’t in the mood. Remove the male after mating, or if you see any signs of aggression.
Female Readiness Signs
A well-fed female who’s settled after her last moult and is guarding her web or burrow tends to be most receptive. If she seems restless or defensive, she may not be quite ready; patience pays off here.
Post-pairing Conditions
Keep things calm and stable after pairing. Maintain those slightly raised humidity levels and make sure the female feels secure, with minimal disturbances. Keep feeding her well but offer only easy-to-grab prey—she’s likely to hang close to her web or retreat.
Sac Timeline
Egg sac production can vary, but expect a window of 4–10 weeks after a successful pairing before she lays. Once the sac appears, she’ll guard it closely. The female may produce a sac later if the seasons inside the enclosure don’t mimic those familiar Chilean rhythms.
Incubation Notes
Leave the sac with the female for around 6–8 weeks. After that point, you can gently remove it and artificially incubate if desired, but handle with care—these spiders aren’t the most delicate, but sacs can be tricky to manage without stress or damage.
Expected Sling Count
Numbers can vary wildly, but most keepers see anywhere from 100 to over 300 spiderlings in a healthy sac. Don’t bet on exact numbers; each sac has a mind of its own.
Risks and Cautions
This isn’t the trickiest Grammostola by any means, but patience and a gentle approach are key. Females occasionally eat males or abandon sacs, especially if conditions are off or she’s disturbed. There can be long waits between pairing and sac, with some females taking their sweet time. This species is slow-growing, so don’t expect a jackpot of quick-maturing spiderlings either.
