Wild Environmental Triggers

Captive Breeding Window

There’s no established 'season' in UK or European collections, but successful keepers often aim for peak sexual maturity after an adult moult, as soon as the female’s exoskeleton has fully hardened. Pairings may be attempted throughout the year, but mid to late spring, following a slight increase in moisture and warmth, can echo their native triggers.

Pre-pairing Conditioning

Ensure both spiders are freshly moulted, well-fed, and stress-free. Gradually ramp up humidity in the weeks beforehand with extra misting and deeper substrate, and feed up the female to reduce the chances of her making a meal of the suitor.

Male Introduction Guidance

Introduce the male to the female’s enclosure in the evening, ideally after both have eaten. The male should be allowed to approach on his terms. Stay close, as females can be flighty or defensive. Keep a long tool handy—separating them quickly is often essential.

Female Readiness Signs

A receptive female often lingers closer to the mouth of her burrow, sometimes laying faint webbing near the entrance. If she’s not receptive, she’ll stay hidden or show defensive posturing as soon as the male turns up.

Post-pairing Conditions

Once you spot successful pairing or the male has escaped with all his legs, gently raise humidity again and keep disturbance to a minimum. Feed the female well and continue to offer a damp, stable substrate. Avoid changing enclosure layout or temperature until after the sac is made.

Sac Timeline
