Wild Breeding Season
Wild breeding seems to fall in the wetter parts of the year, when humidity is consistently high and there's plenty of warmth about. Like other Avics from northern South America, it's safe to assume they get busy when the forest is lush and teeming—usually following the region's heavier rains.
Wild Environmental Triggers
Consistently elevated humidity, warm ambient temperatures, and an abundance of webbing spots up in the trees set the scene for breeding in the wild. Changes in rainfall and the arrival of fresh, moist conditions are likely the big green light for mating to kick off.
Native Climate Context
Avicularia braunshauseni call the tropical rainforests of northern South America home, where it’s warm (generally 22–28°C) and humidity rarely drops below 70%. There’s little annual temperature swing, but lots of seasonal rain, making the forests lush, green, and packed with climbing opportunities.
Captive Breeding Window
Captive pairings seem to go best during spring or early summer, when you can slowly boost that humidity a bit, to roughly 75–80%, and keep temperatures nice and steady between 23–26°C. Mimic a Brazilian rainy patch, with gentle increases in misting and a stable thermal gradient.
Pre-pairing Conditioning
Give both male and female a good meal about a week before introductions—well-fed spiders are less likely to nip each other. Some keepers gently up the humidity and mist a touch more for a week or two in the run-up, as if a tropical shower just rolled through.
Male Introduction Guidance
Always introduce the male into the female’s enclosure, ideally late in the day when they feel more secure. Let him explore and court from a safe distance. Supervise the whole thing: Avics can be skittish, and the female may need some time to warm up before showing interest. Provide plenty of webbing and escape routes for the male.
Female Readiness Signs
A female that’s ready often webs more heavily, is plump and well-fed, and might be seen hanging out near the entrance to her web rather than deep inside it. Day-to-day, she’ll seem more relaxed and less reclusive. If she’s freshly moulted, allow several weeks for hardening before pairing.
Post-pairing Conditions
After mating, keep humidity on the higher side and maintain temperatures steadily in the mid-20s Celsius. Reduce disturbance and avoid rehousing or enclosure cleaning—let her settle and, if successful, she’ll likely web up more and stay tucked away. Continue with regular, gentle misting and keep water topped up.
Sac Timeline
There’s not much hard data, but going by close relatives, expect an egg sac (if fertile) anywhere from 6 to 10 weeks after mating. She’ll often web it up securely. Keep an eye out for defensive behaviour and increased webbing; nosiness from humans is rarely appreciated at this stage.
Incubation Notes
The female usually guards the sac for several weeks. Patience is key—fiddling with the enclosure risks stressing her and damaging the sac. If artificial incubation is necessary, treat it like other Avics: moderately warm (24–26°C), high humidity but excellent ventilation.
Expected Sling Count
Egg sac counts are poorly documented, but Avics of similar size often yield 60 to 120 spiderlings, sometimes a bit more. Don’t bank on higher numbers unless you’re lucky; be ready for variation.
Risks and Cautions
As with other Avics, males are quite vulnerable to cannibalism and should never be left unsupervised. Sometimes females will eat the sac if disturbed or if conditions dip. False sacs do occur and, rarely, females may moult instead of producing. Breeding success is not guaranteed and this species isn’t ideal for beginners.
