What makes a tarantula beginner-friendly?

A good first tarantula should be reasonably hardy, tolerant of small husbandry wobbles and available as a captive-bred animal. Calm is useful, but predictable husbandry matters more than chasing the idea of a perfectly docile spider.

• Clear temperature and humidity requirements.
• Manageable speed and defensive response.
• Good feeding response without being frantic.
• Plenty of reliable care information.

Common beginner choices

Species often recommended to newer UK keepers include Grammostola pulchra, Tliltocatl albopilosus, Brachypelma hamorii, Brachypelma albiceps and Aphonopelma chalcodes. Availability changes, and individual spiders still have personalities, because apparently nobody told them they were meant to read the care sheet.

Species to leave until later

Fast Old World species, defensive fossorials and very delicate spiderlings are usually better after you have some enclosure maintenance, feeding and rehousing experience behind you.
